Samsung Has Its Own AI-Designed Chip. Soon, Others Will Too
Samsung is using artificial intelligence to automate the insanely complex and subtle process of designing cutting-edge computer chips. The South Korean giant is one of the first chipmakers to use AI to create its chips. Samsung is using AI features in new software from Synopsys, a leading chip design software firm used by many companies. "What you're seeing here is the first of a real commercial processor design with AI," says Aart de Geus, the chairman and co-CEO of Synopsys. Others, including Google and Nvidia, have talked about designing chips with AI.

Global chip shortage to keep plaguing automakers in coming months
Automakers around the world will likely be forced to continue production cutbacks in the coming months before a global semiconductor supply shortage can be resolved, industry experts say. Japan's Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. have said they partially halted production at factories around the world due to the chip shortage just as they began recovering from pandemic-forced plant shutdowns. Demand for chips, widely used in electronic devices including those in vehicles, has been surging across various sectors since last fall as the global economy picked up. "A gap in demand and supply for semiconductors suddenly occurred late last year due to a coincidence of some events including a sharp recovery in global auto sales, robust sales of smartphones and installment of the 5G networks," said Yoshiharu Izumi, senior analyst at SBI Securities Co. As video game sales jumped with people spending more time at home, robust production of game consoles ahead of the rollouts in November of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X console from Microsoft Corp. also contributed to the chip supply crunch, experts say.

How AI and machine learning can help you defend the enterprise from cyberattacks ZDNet
This ebook, based on the latest ZDNet/TechRepublic special feature, offers a detailed look at how to build risk management policies to protect your critical digital assets. Security measures have increased significantly in the last several years, and malicious actors have similarly advanced their techniques to keep pace, particularly with advances in attack methods such as fileless malware. Likewise, the security model of'serverless' computing platforms like AWS Lambda are completely different from traditional computers. These itinerant computing concepts are not effectively secured by the traditional model of checking file hashes against known malware samples. For a robust, modern defense, an adaptive monitoring solution that leverages machine learning to identify anomalous patterns indicative of an attack in its infancy is necessary to defend enterprise systems from cyberattacks.

Putting AI smarts behind multichannel product data
It's for sure not the sexiest topic, but product information management software, or PIM, is becoming more top of mind with B2B companies. These businesses sell across an increasing number of channels from ecommerce sites and print catalogs to social media and voice-activated devices. "I cover ecommerce platforms and PIM technology, and I get three times as many calls on PIM," says Bruce Eppinger, senior analyst for digital business strategy at Forrester Research Inc. Because as more manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers dive into digital commerce, they're learning that it's becoming more important than ever to maintain accurate product information displayed throughout a growing number of channels including internet search results, Google Maps, social media, mobile apps, print catalogs, third-party online marketplaces, as well as their own ecommerce sites. The growing need to optimize content for multiple channels, Eppinger says, "is why the PIM market is growing gangbusters."
